As a publicist (and brand manager), the number one question I’ve always received from small business owners is “Why should I hire a publicist or a brand manager when I can do it myself?”.
The answer to this is extremely simple, let me break it down into a quick 3 part answer:
You could do it yourself. I mean, there’s lots of things that you can do for yourself; you COULD give yourself a mani/pedi, rather than going to the nail salon. You COULD even give yourself a haircut, rather than going to see your hairstylist. You COULD even build your own website, rather than hiring someone else to do it.
First, realize sometimes the beauty of paying to go to your nail salon, your hairstylist, or your web designer is that it saves you time. As a small business owner, I know that time is incredibly invaluable and important to you.
Second, when picking a publicist or brand manager you want to deal with a professional. A pro knows not only the basics, but also knows what to do in times of crisis and/or an emergency. God forbid if you ever experience trouble branding your business or have a public relations nightmare, but your publicist/brand manager should be able to advise you of the correct steps to execute if such a case should occur.
Third, no one can succeed without a team. That dream you’re going towards – of being the next Nasty Gal or the latest and greatest beauty blogger, or even becoming just like the business owners that you admire. You will reach these goals all the more faster and successfully if you have a strong team around you, supporting you, giving you the knowledge that YOU DON’T HAVE to succeed and all you can do is your best. Remember, even your hairstylist needs the shampoo girl.
So there you have it – 3 reasons as to why you should hire a publicist/brand manager, rather than trying to take on the task all by yourself. I know that we’re all super women, but ladies, we cannot do everything ourselves.
What makes you hesitant to hire a publicist and/or brand manager for your small business? What issues have you ran into looking to bring someone onto your team to help your business grow?
