If you have been reading this site long enough or follow me on social media, you know that I am a proud bookworm. Reading almost 60+ books a year. My parents, especially my mom, was big on learning, and my dad was big on education. Hence, my love for reading. Recently on Instagram, someone asked me what my top five or ten book recommendations would be. So I thought it would be great to share it with you all.
The Autobiography of Quincy Jones
This book is ALWAYS on my list of recommendations to others who want to be successful. Especially, those who have had an impoverished life and want someone they can relate to. My youth was not like Quincy’s, but I can relate to him. The stories he shares in the book and one I would put an emphasis on is “him and his brother slept on the ground with roaches”. Listen, I am not about that life. This man at a young age saw something better for himself. A true musical genius.
I had heard about this book years prior to actually reading it. When I finally decided to pick it up at my local library I was so thankful. Lynda, shares her insight as she transitions in life and into various industries. She is the Queen of POM WOW and a couple other brands you are now familiar with. Every time I see POM WOW or Fiji water I think of her and her innovative design.
This book was given to me by a friend while I was in my second year of business. If you know me I am a huge Barney’s fan. Given the chance I could spend all day in there. The book is written by former co-ceo of Barney’s, Gene Pressman and Noah Kerner. They share the story of how Barney’s back then turned into the company it is today. From the early start of the family, to the transition of mens suits in a Jewish community, to the black bag all the celebrities are carrying.
I remember when I first heard about Gary Vee. The “loud guy who is dominating in wine library”, someone told me. I don’t really like wine but I love knowing people who dominate in a niche market. I was living in Atlanta when I read his book. Social Media was on the climb but he had brilliant advice. The book is slightly outdated now but it is chalked full of information. It’s outdated not because the information is bad, but because social media has changed so much since he wrote it.
Blake is someone who everyone wants to meet, buy tequila shots, and discuss how you can partner to change the world together. You can say, he has pioneered the social entrepreneur pathway for millions to follow. You can be a for profit company like; TOMS Shoes and still have a global impact. The book really resonated with me when I read it. I am a giving person and I want to change the world for the better, for millions of future women business owners. It sparked something in me. Maybe this is why it’s one of the books I make sure to give others.
Earlier this year, Amy of CJW Designs, mentioned to me on one of our design calls that I needed to get this book. There was urgency in her voice. Most times when people say “Tasha you need to get this book” I Kanye shrug it. I am very picky about the books I read and the information I consume. However, Amy knows me pretty darn well. Let’s just say, the creative and Jesus lover in me needed to read this book. So many Aha! moments, highlighting, sticky notes, and underlining information.
The Writings of Florence Scovel Shinn
A couple of weeks ago, Krissy of Featherweight Studio’s, gifted me this book. What was funny, it just showed up on my door step with no note attached. I posted on Instagram a “thank you to whomever sent it” message. She wrote that it was her. I’m very thankful that she sent it. This book is about metaphysics, based on the bible and very insightful stories about how we speak things over our lives. As well as, how we need to really gain control of our words and thoughts. After reading it, my former life coach Stephanie commented about two of her other books I needed to get. I was already complementing one. Then when I was lurking on Kim Zoliack’s Instagram, she mentioned the exact two books Stephanie had mentioned. That confirmed it. They just arrived from Amazon – The Game of Life and How to Play It (Prosperity Classic) and The Magic Path of Intuition.
You’re probably surprised to see this Dr Seuss book on the list. However, ever since I heard it read at one of my sisters graduation events from UT (Hook ‘Em Horns \m/) it has been a must stay on my list. It reminds me of all the things I can and will do in life if I believe in myself. So many times, we give up on our dreams, goals, and ambitions because they look too hard. Anything is possible through Christ Jesus. I am a firm believer in that. You will read more on that tomorrow.
If you consult with me you know this book. I refer it to everyone! It’s a mini freelance bible and I wish she would write an updated version. It gave me so much first hand knowledge, from someone who had been there, and knew what I really needed to do. As you know, there is so much fluff out there. This will truly help guide you. Especially if, you’re starting a service based business.
The Bible
First, let me say I never want to force God down my reader’s or audience’s throats. He happens to be a huge part of my life and I choose not to denounce him to appease others. I did that for a long period of my life, and that part of my life is a huge learning experience to say the least (insert laughing and crying emoji). Anyways, in the last couple of months this book has been my saving grace. My friend Katrice and I joke how we have never learned so much into God. It’s a good thing. If you have never really leaned on Him in your relationship, I suggest doing so. It’s totally worth it.
Here are a couple of books that are very close to my heart also; Eleven Rings, By Invitation Only, Be the Miracle, The Power of Habit, Love Does, The Richest Man in Babylon, and Normal Gets You Nowhere. I am a lover of books. I always will be. They let me escape into a whole new world and learn things along the way. I truly hope, that you can purchase all of these books and that they help you like they helped me.
