What’s your biggest accomplishment? Professionally? Breaking free from the 9-5 & becoming a full time business owner. It was both the scariest and most liberating feeling in the world but I must admit what I truly feel are my biggest accomplishments in life are my relationships, the ones with my husband, family & friends. Nothing is more important to me than this.
What are three books you would recommend to our readers?
- The Happiness Project by Gretchen Rubin
- Annie Leibovitz at Work by Annie Leibovitz
- The Fire Starter Sessions by Danielle LaPorte
What’s the biggest lesson you have learned since launching? Time Management. To always over estimate the amount of time you think you need to accomplish your to-do list. Allocate and set aside time for unexpected things that come up throughout the workday…an email you have to answer, a 30 min phone call with a new client, having to run out to the printers or post office etc. I used to fill up my day (and I mean really fill it up) and there wasn’t any extra room for the “unexpected”…I wasn’t being realistic, sometime life just happens and you have to roll with it. This has been my biggest takeaway.
What’s your advice to someone interested in starting their own business? Be prepared to work harder than you every thought you could. Also be prepared to know when to shut off and enjoy life away from your business. Trust your instincts, stop looking and worrying about what everyone else is doing and just start creating for yourself. Practice, practice and practice some more. Comparing yourself to others won’t make you a better photographer…getting out there and experimenting is what will. So grab your camera (grab a friend) get outside and just start creating things. Experiment, make mistakes, never stop learning new techniques and always always always be kind to others 🙂
Where do you receive inspiration?
Hands down, music. Especially movie soundtracks. They are so moving and inspiring…this one is one of my favorites (gives me chills every time!) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u5FyRZbqfeM
If you could have one famous entrepreneur as your mentor who would it be?
Oh! Good one…It’s a tie between Tim Walker and Annie Leibovitz.
Do you feel your life is balanced between work life and your personal life? Haha oh goodness no, at least not for last few months leading up to the launch of the shop. The thing is, it doesn’t feel like work to me, I love what I do so it’s easy for me to get lost in it, look up and realize it’s 8pm. I don’t like to make myself feel too guilty about how much I work. When you are launching anything (new website, shop, product, service, business) that’s the time to hustle and get it done. Even amongst the craziness you have to make time to see and spend time with the people you love…that’s what keeps you sane 🙂 I always make time to see my family, friends and spend time with my husband (who I call my secret weapon because without him being supportive of my goals and dreams it would be a lot harder for me to do what I do).
