SEO stands for Search Engine Optimization. It is defined as the process of naturally affecting the visibility or ranking of a website or web page on search engines like Google, Yahoo, or Bing. With the new age of SEO, it is beginning to mean a lot more. SEO is used for content development, and ranked according to how informative a website or blog article is. SEO is used in product descriptions, blog articles, product titles, tags, social media and more.
A lot of new business owners do not use SEO correctly or at all. For creative start-ups especially, SEO is extremely important. Perhaps you have experienced these scenarios:
1. You like (popular fashion website)’s stuff but you don’t like their prices. When trying to find another fashion site like (popular fashion website), you come up short. You can’t understand why there are so many little boutiques around your area but none online. You don’t want to shop at a big name store, like UO or others, and you want to support your local businesses.
2. You are trying to find a certain item of clothing, specific to what you usually wear in terms of style, color or brand. You don’t want to pay a fortune, and you are trying to shop small. When you enter what you think is a perfect description of the item into the search bar, only big brand names come up in your search results.
3. You’re on a fashion site. You’re trying to find a certain type of clothing. You search and search through all of their merchandise to find what you’re looking for, but whenever you type something in the search bar, you get no results. You know that the fashion site has what you’re looking for, but you just can’t find it.
4. You’re trying to purchase something online, but you don’t know if the description is accurate for the garment. The picture doesn’t look realistic, or accurately colored. You don’t know what the garment will look like on your body type. You don’t know much about the garment because it is titled something like, “Bianca.”
If you have experienced any of these scenarios, you have faced a problem with SEO. As a business owner, you are trying to build a relationship with your customers without ever seeing them face to face. When someone walks into a small boutique in their neighborhood, they are able to talk and hang out with the business owner. You have to create that same feeling when someone is on your site.
Don’t get me wrong, SEO takes a lot of work and a lot of time. When you think you’ve finally perfected the SEO on your site, you will have to change it all again to fit the newest trends. Sometimes, SEO feels like a ever fleeting thing that nobody really knows much about.
